Throwing a Tree

Throwing a Tree

New Forest

THE two executioners stalk along over the knolls,
Bearing two axes with heavy heads shining and wide,
And a long limp two-handled saw toothed for cutting great boles,
And so they approach the proud tree that bears the death-mark on its
side.

Jackets doffed they swing axes and chop away just above ground,
And the chips fly about and lie white on the moss and fallen
leaves;
Till a broad deep gash in the bark is hewn all the way round,
And one of them tries to hook upwards a rope, which at last he achieves.

The saw then begins, till the top of the tall giant shivers:
The shivers are seen to grow greater each cut than before:
They edge out the saw, tug the rope; but the tree only quivers,
And kneeling and sawing again, they step back to try pulling once
more.

Then, lastly, the living mast sways, further sways: with a shout
Job and Ike rush aside. Reached the end of its long staying powers
The tree crashes downward: it shakes all its neighbours through
out,
And two hundred years’ steady growth has been ended in less than two
hours.
—Thomas Hardy

In this poem its giving lots of personifications. Like when it said “two-handled saw toothed for cutting great boles,” it’s trying to say that saws have teeth to cut down stuff but saws don’t really have no teeth. Also when they said “till the top of the tall giant shivers,” it’s trying to say that a tree is starting to shiver but they cant the executioners were chopping the tree so hard they made a vibration go all the way up the tree making it look as if its shivering.

The first personification is they approach a proud tree the personification is proud tree because a tree cant be proud.

The second is. And chips fly out of the sky and lie on the moss that is not human because a chip can’t just suddenly fall out of the sky.

The third is the tree quivers the personification is the tree because tree’s cant move.

Shout cant not move and other people try to get it down and one more thing the tree cant not talk and throw other thing and when people try to put it on the machine and it’s shake and moves a lot that my thing I have to say and i love the three and i never put it down for reason

Personification

One uses of personification in this poem is the tall giant shivers I say this because trees don’t shiver.

Another uses of personification in the poem is when it said two axes with heavy heads.

Throwing a tree
One personification the author use was “THE two executioners approach the proud tree” I think that’s personification because a tree can’t be proud so the action is proud and the tree is being personified. Another personification was “But the tree only quivers. I think that’s personification because a tree can’t quiver. The verb is quiver and the tree is getting personified.

Throwing a Tree

It says that the tree is shivering. A tree cannot shiver cause is not a living thing.
The second is the tree quivers the personification is the tree because tree’s cant move.
Another uses of personification in the poem is that said two axes with heavy heads.

One of the personifications is in stanza 3 sentence three and it says they edge out of the saw, tug out the; but the tree only quivers it is a personification because a tree can not quivers and a personification gives characteristic to a non human and tree is not a human. The next personification And so they approach the proud tree that bears the death-mark on its sides that is a personification because a tree can’t be proud.

1st example from the poem Throwing a Tree is, and a long limp two-handled saw toothed for cutting great boles. I know that this is a personification because a saw cannot limp or have teeth because it would bite you. . The 2nd reason from the poem Throwing a Tree is, and so they approach the proud tree that bears the death-mark on its side’s. I know that is personification because a tree cannot have a death mark on it.

There are tow personifications that I pointed out. this article has a lot of personification one that I found was that: the top of the tall giant shivers the other is that
The tree only quivers, both of these personifications gave human characteristics to nonliving or Nonhuman objects/organisms

Throwing A Tree

The first personification is the proud tree with the bears death mark on its side.
The second one is that it says that the tree was kneeling down and sawing again.

Some of the personification when it says ‘‘but the tree only quivers
And kneeling’’. Think that this shows personification because
They are saying that a trees are is able to kneeling down, but only
Humans can Neal down not trees so this is an example of personification. Anther example of personification is when it says
“And a long limp two-handled saw toothed for cutting great boles,
And so they approach the proud tree that bears the death-mark on its side”. I think that this shows personification because a saw
Cant aproch you only a human can. They are trying to make it
Seem that the saw is a human. So I think that the two examples that I gave were personifition.

Personifications- 1.Jackets doffed they swing axes and chop away just above ground.
That is a personification because jackets cannot doffed.

2. Till a broad deep gash in the bark is hewn all the way round.
That is a personification because a broad cannot bark.

That they saw a tree with bear of a death-mark on it’s side like a note on a dead body.

A personification is the proud tree. This is a personification because a tree can’t be proud because a tree does not have any feelings. Another personification is the tree has reached the end of its long staying powers this is a personification because trees don’t have any powers

The first use of personification is where it said, “bearing two axes with heavy heads shining and wide”. Axes do not have heads. Axes are inanimate objects. Another use of personification is “The saw begins till the top of the giant shivers. “ The giant in the poem is the tree. A tree cannot shiver; it’s an inanimate object.

The personification of the first poem is when the author said chips fly. That is personification because people know chip of wood can’t fly because the have no wings. The second personification is when the author say’s the big giant shivers. That is a good personification because the are talking about the trees and we know trees cant shiver.

One sentence that I have found is “And so they approached the proud tree that bears the dead mark on its side. This is a example of personification because it says the tree is proud and trees can’t be proud. Another example of personification is “They edge out the saw, tug the rope; but the tree only quivers. I also said this is an example of personification because I think trees can’t quiver and trees are inanimate objects. Which means they don’t have human qualities. Those are the two personifications that I have found.

Throwing a tree
It this poem it has personification
The tree is sitting with his friends eating sand witch and having fun relaxing and playing around with his friends. When they were playing the throwing tree flip and fly.
This is a personification because tress cant fly and they cant fly either or eat sand witch

Personification is when an inanimate object is given human qualities. The first use of personification is where it said, “bearing two axes with heavy heads shining and wide”. Axes do not have heads. Humans have heads. Axes are inanimate objects. Another use of personification is “The saw begins till the top of the giant an inanimate object. shivers. “ The giant in the poem is the tree. A tree cannot shiver because it is not alive. A tree is an inanimate object.

One examples of personification used in the poem is jackets doffed they swing axes and chop away just above ground. Jacket can’t swing axes. Jacket can’t swing axes because they can’t move or work. Another example of personification used in the poem is bearing two axes with heavy heads shining and wide, and a long limp two-handled saw toothed for cutting great boles. A saw can’t limp. The saw can’t limp because it has no leg to walk with! Those are my two examples of personification used in the poem.

in this poem they are giving many of personification like when it said Bearing two axes with heavy heads shining and wide.and also when it said And a long limp two-handled saw toothed for cutting great boles.this poem had many of personification and maybe even one day i am gonna make a poem with even more personifications on it because i like writing poems many times and i am very sure that other people like to write them many times too.also for other people who does not know what is personification is personification is like a sentence that is to fake to be true ike for example my table went to the shower to tke a bath because it had beans an its shirt everybody knows that tables cant walk or have shirts and for who ever puts shirts on there table im just letting you know you are weird another example my mirror cried when he seen my face that is fake because everybody knows that your mirror cant break all of a sudden unless your ugly but nobody is ugly and mirrors dont break unless yourself breaks one or maybe even more than one no you and maybe your family knows what is personification.

The saw then begins, till the top of the tall giant shivers:

The saw then begins, till the top of the tall giant shivers is an example of personification because they refer to the tall giant as a tree and a tree is an inanimate object, which cannot shiver. Personification is giving an inanimate object living qualities.

Two axes with heavy heads shining and wide,

This is an example of personification, which is giving non-living thing human qualities, axes cannot have heads because an axe is not human but through personification an axe can be given the human quality of a head.

The first example I’m giving is in the first part of the text, “two axes with heavy heads shining and wide”. The two axes don’t really have heads, because humans have heads. Its saying the medal part of the axes are heavy, so its referring heads to an axe.
The second example I’m giving is in the third part of the text, “The saw then begins, till the top of the tall giant shivers” its not really saying the giant trees shivers its saying its chopping the tall trees as the trees blow in the wind so it makes it look like its shivering.

The first sentence the poet uses with personification is “Bearing two axes with heavy heads shining and wide” I think this first sentence uses personification because axes do not have heads so they are giving personification to the word heads with the word axe.
This is personification because they are comparing a non-living object to something that humans have which is a head. Personification means when you compare human qualities to a non-living object. The second sentence the poet use that has personification is “ till the top of the tall giant shivers” they compare shivering with a giant this second sentence has personification because they are comparing shivering which is a human quality to a non-living object and that is the some thing personification means.

Chips fly about and lie white on the moss and fallen

The saw then begins, till the top of the tall giant shivers”

These are my two examples that I took from the poem. I think that this is important because, chips cannot fly. It could not because it doesn’t have human’s features. My second sentence is a personification because the saw cannot till the top of the tall giant and shivers.

Personification: Giving human attributes to inanimate or non-human thing.
