Ancient Tomb Discovered in Egypt
Archaeologists make one of the biggest discoveries since 1922, when King Tut’s tomb was uncovered

Egpytian King

Archaeologists say they've made a huge discovery in Egypt – by accident! A U.S.-based team has uncovered an ancient tomb containing five sarcophagi with mummies. The tomb was found in the Valley of the Kings outside Luxor, Egypt. This is the first tomb uncovered in the area since King Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered in 1922.

A team of archaeologists from the University of Memphis was actually working on the nearby site of a 19th Dynasty pharaoh when it made the discovery. Archaeologists found the remains of the huts of men who had worked on the tomb and a shaft leading to the tomb.

"It was a wonderful thing," said Edwin Brock, of the team that discovered the tomb. "It was just so amazing to find an intact tomb here after all the work that's been done before. This was totally unexpected."

Inside the Ancient Tomb
The tomb was found at the bottom of a 33-foot deep pit. A narrow shaft leads down another 16 feet to the tomb door, which is made of stone blocks. The tomb is thought to be about 3,000 years old. Archaeologists say it dates to the 18th Dynasty. They say it is the most important discovery of its kind in more than eighty years!

Inside the tomb are five sarcophagi with mummies. One sarcophagus has fallen and another is partly open, showing the brown cloth that covers the mummy inside. The sarcophagi have colorful funeral masks.

Researchers say the tomb is relatively bare and undecorated. The tomb’s appearance has led researchers to believe that it does not belong to a pharaoh. They say it was probably built for people connected to the royal family.

"It’s somebody who had the favor of the king because not everybody could come and make their tomb in the Valley of the Kings," said Otto Schaden, who led the U.S. team.

What's Next?
After archaeologists finish clearing debris from the shaft, they can search the tomb for hieroglyphs that identify those buried inside. The goal is to remove the sarcophagi before the weather gets too hot to work in the desert, Schaden said. High temperatures usually begin in May and mark the end of the digging season for archaeologists.

6 Facts: The archaeologists that made the discovery said that they discovered the tomb by accident. Questions: How do you find a tomb that is in a 33-foot deep pit? Why is it the only tomb discovered since the King’s in 1922? What are sarcophagi? This article was very interesting because of how the found mummies in the tombs and how they can find out that the appearance of the tomb can lead them into finding out what the tomb was years ago. I don’t get how people like us read hieroglyphs that were from a long time ago do they use technology? It’s freaky how in the tomb there is one coffin that’s open and shoes the brown cloth they use to cover the mummy in it.

The 2 questions I really have for this article is what was the archaeologist really looking for? And Why was they looking for whatever they was looking for. I think it was kind of cool that the archaeologist found king Tut's tomb. I also noticed that one of the questions I asked was answered and the tomb that was found was very deep in the ground . The tomb must have been very big because five mummies were in it I also think it was nasty that one of the mummies were open even though there was nothing but bone.

On thing that I have a question for is the fact that they will make king tut’s tomb so hard to find. I will never do any thing like that because I may forget some thing is at and try to go back and try to find it and I am like man I forgot where I put the tomb at. They said that the people who found the tomb were students at university of Memphis that’s means that they were so very smart. Why would they even put the tombs underground because he animal will get to them. Why do people try to dig up the past its is not that fun trust me I tried I before

One fact that is in this article is that The team that found the tomb was originally working on the 19th Dynasty pharaoh. They found The tomb at the bottom of a 33-foot deep pit. The ancient tomb is almost 3,000 years old. I find it interesting that they were actually working on something else. I wonder how they would find something that large and ancient. I'm also curious as to how something that is over 3,000 years old can still be that well in shape, because things that have been left in heat for a month have been known to brake down.

I think that king tut’s tomb was buried about 4000 or 3000 years ago. I want to know how did they find a tomb on accident. I also want to know why they dig up to 33 feet. I think that the article is good because I know that the really wouldn’t tell us everything on how the found the tomb. The title was little bit unbelievable because why would the put it on the world news when it was found in Massachusetts.
I don’t really know about the tomb though. Was the body kind of wrapped in toilet paper or something? I want to know so much about this article.

“Archaeologists say they've made a huge discovery in Egypt – by accident!”

What was the mistake?
What was the discovery ?

This article is was very interesting. The reason I think it was interesting is because, I want to become a archaeologist, and this was kind of a game. It was very sneaky and it was entertaining. The archaeologists had discovered something by accident. They learned information about over 3,000 years ago. This article had me anxious to read more, it kept me thinking about how they travel everywhere and they get so much information and they also get extra as well. I liked this article a lot , not just because of the archaeologists, because of the information they got ,and all the adventures they had.
